Gender-Inclusive Housing

Gender-inclusive housing is for students to voluntarily live in the same space regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or other identities.

We offer gender-inclusive housing in an effort to support a positive campus climate and welcoming living experience for all students.

Safety, respect, and inclusion are incredibly important. Gender-inclusive housing community members must agree to the following terms and conditions.

    • Successfully complete Safe Zone training.
    • Respect all community members by maintaining a safe and comfortable living environment, free of discrimination based on characteristics including (but not limited to) race, sex, color, age, national origin, ability, sexual orientation, religion or marital status.
    • Complete the housing application process, including the gender-inclusive housing application form.
    • Abide by all rules and regulations of the Champlain College catalog.
    • Follow the rules outlined in the Student Code of Conduct and Housing & Residential Life policies.?
    • Contribute positively to the community.
    • Respect the motivations of all community members for this option.
    • Use inclusive and socially just language within and outside the living space.
    • Seek to understand different experiences.
    • Support social justice and diversity initiatives from within the community.
    • Be accountable for one¡¯s guests and educate them regarding community expectations and values.
    • Students may be placed in a multi-occupancy room and may request specific roommate(s). In the event of a vacancy within a gender-inclusive room, the student will be able to select another pull-in. However, should that student not be able to locate another resident, Champlain College will fill the room accordingly.
    • Applicants who are not selected to take part in the gender-inclusive housing will remain eligible to take part in the general housing selection process under the usual terms and conditions of the housing selection process.
    • Filling out a gender-inclusive housing application does not guarantee a specific space or gender-inclusive assignment. Admission to this living community is based upon available space. Students who apply and are not selected will be placed on a waitlist for when spaces within the community become available.?

The Application Process

You’ve decided gender-inclusive housing is right for you. Now what do you do?

Those interested in living in Champlain¡¯s gender-inclusive community must select that they are interested in this community when filling out their housing application on The Housing Director (THD). You will be required to complete a Safe Zone training, which is provides a baseline understanding of how to develop a shared community expectation that is beyond the gender binary. The date and time of the Safe Zone training is communicated to students via email.

The first-year gender-inclusive housing community is in Summit Hall and the upper-year community is on the second floor of Valcour Hall. For upper-year students, 194 St. Paul and Boardman Hall are mixed-gender suites that are great gender-inclusive options!

Application decisions are communicated to applicants prior to Housing Selection and will include a housing assignment.?Accepted students are not required to participate in housing selection.

If you are accepted, you’ll be placed in a double room and must fill the room with a roommate of your choice. The roommate must also complete the Safe Zone Training requirement. In the event of a vacancy within a gender-inclusive room, you will be able to select another roommate. However, if you are not be able to locate another roommate, Champlain will fill the vacancy.

Please Note: Families are not notified of enrollment in this program.

Champlain reserves the right to assign or reassign students to fill open rooms in suites at 194 St. Paul regardless of sex or gender identity.
