Biography

Amanda is the Acting Dean of the Division of Communication and Creative Media, the Chair of the Game Studio (a seven-program cohort of faculty and students), and a Professor of Game Design. She has been a faculty member of Champlain College since 2005, and has an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art focused on games as a persuasive communication medium.

Amanda Crispel is a veteran of the game industry. She has worked for companies such as Br?derbund Software, Mattel, Lego, Leapfrog, The Learning Company and Nickelodeon, and she specializes in games and interactive media for children and families and games with persuasive or educational purposes.

She has also worked on several research grants in the serious game space targeting the prevention of sexual violence against women.

Megan Everts

Biography

Megan Everts began her career at Champlain College in early 2016. She has two Master’s Degrees in Education (in Reading and Mathematics) and a BS in Mathematics, from the University of New Hampshire, the College of William and Mary and the University of Vermont, respectively. A former middle school Math and Reading teacher, Megan also has a background in fundraising, having spent five years in Advancement at Arcadia University. She is always on the lookout for an adventure involving kids and books and intends to start a line of greeting cards at one point. She regrets that a certain author created a certain set of magical books before Megan herself could write them – JK! (and that means Just Kidding here).

Biography

Dr. Patti Aldredge came to Champlain College in the fall of 2015 from Virginia Commonwealth University where she served as Associate Professor and Director of Field Education. Prior to that she served as Clinical Associate Professor and Deputy Director of Field Learning and Community Partnership at the NYU Silver School of Social Work in New York City and as full-time faculty and Associate Director of Field Education at The University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She entered academia with a 20-year medical social work career, including appointments at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR), and The Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX. Additionally, her practice includes oncology and end-of-life, traumatic brain injury, youth-at-risk, addictions, and protective services. She provided individual, family, and group counseling to youth in the Juvenile Justice system, and co-founded an urban theater group for youth.

Biography

Scott Stevens is a Professor of Mathematics and Dean of the Division of Information Technology and Science at Champlain College. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Vermont in 1999 in Applied Mathematics. He spent two years at The University of Montana and five years at Penn State University. He came to Champlain College in 2007. He has authored numerous research articles. Most of these involve the mathematical modeling of biomedical fluid dynamics pertaining to intracranial fluid flow and pressure. He has also authored two textbooks. The first is a combination textbook/workbook titled Introduction to Statistics, Think & Do. The second book was written for a course he developed at Champlain College titled Matrices, Vectors, and 3D Math, A Game Programming Approach with MATLAB. When he’s not working, there’s a good chance he’s hanging out with his family, swimming, or wading the rivers and streams of Vermont tangled in fly-fishing line.

Biography

Craig Pepin is Lead Faculty in the Degree Design Lab and also teaches in the Core Curriculum. He earned a Ph.D. in European Intellectual History from Duke University, with a special interest in Modern Germany and the History of Higher Education. Teaching interdisciplinary inquiry-driven courses at Champlain led him to the importance of integrative learning in developing students who can think broadly and synthetically, and in particular, to the intersection between integrative thinking and learning assessment. Most recently his research and praxis has focused on competency-based education, particularly in a general education context, and on the history of General Education in the United States.

He served as Assistant Dean for Assessment at Champlain for 12 years, and four years as President of the New England Educational Assessment Network. He has also consulted with other institutions on general education and assessment, and has served as an accreditation reviewer for the New England Commission of Higher Education. He has presented often at assessment conferences and at the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies. As chair of the College Competency Committee since 2014, he has facilitated the development of the Champlain College Competencies.

Recommended Reading, Listening & Viewing

Watchmen (the novel). Ground breaking in its time, (I read the original comics when they came out in 1986), it holds up exceptionally well. It inverts and explores many of the tropes of superheroes and vigilantism, of conspiracy theories and power. The writing is razor sharp and the images are densely allegorical and intimately interwoven. The HBO miniseries of the same name (2019) is also great, transposing issues of race and policing in ways that again challenge our beliefs about what it means to be a hero. Both are brilliant.

Neal Stephenson’s Anathem is a work of science fiction that renders a richly drawn alternate reality that simultaneously steps through the most interesting thickets of classical Greek philosophy, and mashes it up with quantum mechanics. It is a novel of big ideas wrapped up in adventure, and appeals to everything I love about science fiction.
